Q pays a visit to Deep Space Nine, and Dax stands trial. Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. He spars with Sisko, he insults O'Brien, he makes Bashir sleep for a day or so, but the majority of Q's interactions are with the episode's other guest star: Jennifer Hetrick, returning to her role as Vash, Picard's former love interest, and Q's ex-traveling companion. It's an appalling use of the character who's supposed to be the science officer. This reminded me that I have long-delayed posting about her last Star Trek: Deep Space Nine title, "The Never-Ending Sacrifice", literally a Star Trek book I was SO excited for that I almost pre-ordered on Amazon. Dax does absolutely nothing useful in the episode, leaving all the heavy lifting to O'Brien. According to both the special features on the DS9 DVDs and the book The Deep Space Nine Companion writers of the show actively sought to make sure at least one episode a year would feature an “O'Brien must suffer” plotline. Q, John de Lancie's omnipotent prankster god, first appeared in “Encounter At Farpoint,” the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The working class O'Brien, played by noted Irish actor Colm Meaney, always came off as the most human of all the human characters on Star Trek. Now, I meant to include this but forgot: I think one way to do it, technically, and have it be charming is to add the Doctor and Companion in to the background of 'The Voyage Home', with them desperately trying to clean up time mess after time mess.
